PROJECT SUMMARY:
The former Heslar Naval Armory is a 60,000-square-foot building on the banks of the White River at 29th Street. From 1938 to 2015, it housed naval offices and training facilities, such as a simulated submarine. The demolition and renovation of the building is roughly a $6 million project of which Huston Electric is providing all basic electrical work including teledata, security, fire alarms and surveillance cameras for the new high – school build out.
Currently, the six-person crew is finishing up the service throughout the building and installing lights. Huston Foreman, Bill Eldridge, says there have been a few obstacles in the road since they began work on the project in February 2017 – but nothing uncommon with a remodel of this scale. One challending item with this site is securing the safety of the electrical work – since the building is just off the White River, flooding is common in the lower levels. All outlets have been raised a few feet off the ground to ensure they would not get wet in the event of a flood during the renovation.
With just one new LED light fixture hung in the gymnasium for temporary construction lighting – and several others waiting to be installed on the floor, the room is already brightly lit. Once all lights have been replaced, there will be a very noticeable lighting difference. While replacing the lighting throughout the building is part of the job, the lighting in the cafeteria on the second level is not to be replaced and is labeled as ‘priceless’ on the prints. Captain’s wheel style lights and detailed world globe fixtures throughout speak volumes to the historic significance of the building. Throughout the halls on the first floor, the crew will install several new chandeliers, each with a price tag of $1,800.
The project is forecasted to be finished by the Fall 2018 as there is a wait list for students to attend the new school.
